Meri Pyaari Beti A Young Mother’s Letter To Her Daughter

Trigger Warning: This story addresses themes of abuse, abandonment, and emotional trauma.

My Dearest Vaani,

I write this letter with a trembling hand and a heart that is both heavy and light. Heavy with the weight of the truth I must share with you, but light with the hope that this truth will set both of us free.

My name is Namrita. I am the woman who gave birth to you, the woman who loves you more than words can ever express, and the woman who made the hardest decision of her life the day she left you in the care of another family.

When I first held you in my arms, you were so small, so fragile, and yet, so full of life. Your tiny fingers curled around mine, and in that moment, I knew what love truly meant. But I also knew something else, something that tore me apart inside—I couldn’t give you the life you deserved.

You see, Vaani, you were born out of a time in my life filled with darkness, a darkness that had consumed me for years. I was trapped in a cycle of abuse, pain, and fear, and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t break free. The man who should have loved and protected me was the one who hurt me the most. And when I found out I was pregnant with you, I was terrified. I was terrified that you would be trapped in that same darkness, that you would suffer because of my mistakes, that you would grow up in a world where love was twisted and cruel.

I couldn’t let that happen. I couldn’t let you become a prisoner of my past. So, I made the hardest decision a mother could ever make. I chose to leave you in the care of a family who could give you everything I couldn’t—safety, security, love without fear. It was the only way I could protect you, the only way I could give you the chance to have the life you deserve.

I fled the country shortly after you were born. I needed to escape, to find a way to heal, to survive. But leaving you behind felt like leaving a piece of my soul. Every day since then, I have thought of you. I’ve wondered what you look like, what your voice sounds like, what kind of person you’re becoming. I’ve imagined you smiling, laughing, living the life I always dreamed you would have.

I want you to know, Vaani, that you were never unwanted. You were never unloved. Every moment of every day, I have carried you in my heart. The decision I made was not out of a lack of love, but because of it. I wanted to give you the best chance at a happy life, and I knew that I couldn’t give that to you in the life I was living.

The family that adopted you, they are good people. I chose them because I knew they would love you, cherish you, and protect you in ways I couldn’t. They are your family now, and I am forever grateful to them for giving you the life I couldn’t. But that doesn’t change the fact that you are my daughter, and I will always be your mother.

If, one day, you find yourself wanting to know more about where you came from, about who I am, I want you to know that the door is always open. You don’t have to look far to find me. All you have to do is write me a letter, or find me on social media. I’ve made sure that I can be found, just in case you ever wanted to reach out.

I want to be clear, Vaani: you are under no obligation to find me. If you are happy, if you are loved, if you feel complete in the life you have now, then that is all I could ever hope for. But if there is a part of you that wants to know me, that wants to understand why I did what I did, then I will be here, waiting, with open arms.

Please know that leaving you was the most painful thing I have ever done, but it was also the most loving. I did it because I wanted to give you the chance to be free from the shadows of my past, to grow up in a world where you could be anything and everything you wanted to be.

You are the best thing that ever happened to me, Vaani. You are my light, my hope, my reason for enduring the pain I’ve endured. And even though I’m not there with you, a part of me is with you always.

Be strong, be brave, and know that you are loved, always.

With all my love,

Namrita

The letter was carefully folded and placed in a small box, tucked away in a drawer that Vaani would one day find. And when that day came, when Vaani finally held the letter in her hands and read the words of the mother who had sacrificed everything for her, she would understand. She would understand the love that had driven her mother to do the unthinkable, to leave her behind so that she could have a chance at a life free from the darkness that had once consumed them both.

And perhaps, just perhaps, Vaani would write back. Perhaps she would reach out, and for the first time, mother and daughter would come together, not in a past filled with pain, but in a future filled with hope and healing.
