“Why I Started Boss Beti: The Story Behind the Blog”
A personal essay on the vision, the gap you saw in the space, and what Boss Beti means to you.
Let’s be honest—we were never supposed to take up this much space.
We were raised with tales of resilience, sacrifice, and family pride—but rarely were we told that our stories, dreams, and identities were just as worth celebrating as the generations that came before us. And when we opened Instagram or TikTok looking for reflections of ourselves, we often saw two extremes: the overachiever golden child or the rebellious outcast. Where was the middle? Where was the girl who wanted to heal, build, rest, rise, and still stay rooted in who she is?
That’s the gap I saw. And that’s why I started Boss Beti.
🌺 The Meaning Behind the Name
“Boss” speaks to power, ownership, and authority—words that South Asian girls are rarely encouraged to claim for themselves. And “Beti,” a term of endearment we’ve all heard growing up, reminds us of softness, community, and culture. Together, they’re a contradiction that makes perfect sense:
A girl who leads, loves, questions, heals, and reclaims. A daughter of the diaspora and a boss in her own right.
This blog is not just about girlbossing your way to burnout or becoming some hyper-independent version of “success.” It’s about becoming your fullest self—flaws, fears, faith, and all.
💠What I Wanted to See (That Didn’t Exist Yet)
When I looked around, I saw amazing South Asian creators talking about fashion, beauty, career growth—but I didn’t always see the messiness behind the confidence. The mental health challenges. The identity confusion. The cultural contradictions. The fear of being “too much” for our elders and “not enough” for the mainstream.
I wanted to build a space where:
- Therapy and thalis could exist in the same sentence
- Confidence didn’t mean code-switching away from your culture
- Healing wasn’t something you had to explain or apologize for
- Modesty and boldness weren’t treated as opposites
- South Asian Gen Z women didn’t have to dilute themselves to be heard
🎙️ What Boss Beti Stands For
This isn’t just a blog. It’s a movement for girls who are done being boxed into tropes. It’s for the girl who’s healing from generational wounds but still dances to old filmi songs. The one who might be the first in her family to go to therapy and the one who’s helping her siblings rewrite the narrative. The girl who’s soft, loud, unsure, spiritual, sarcastic, desi, diasporic—and isn’t sorry for any of it.
Every article, resource, and prompt here is a love letter to that girl.
